BIO | CV
Born to Ukrainian and Bosnian parents, Larysa Sendich spent her childhood between the cultures of what her immigrant family remembered as home, Ukrainian communities in the Midwest and on the East Coast and life as an American citizen. This division of cultural circumstances fueled a life-long pursuit for the meaning of ‘Home’. Since the beginning of her career in photography, Larysa has been engaged in a long-term exploration of the search, across cultures and generations, for this fundamental human need.
From sharing space with monks in Japan to the stories of border crossings told by the migrant workers she immersed herself with in Immokalee, Larysa has composed bodies of work that take a deeper look into what home is or becomes. Through the images she creates, the infinite meanings of home – cultural, physical, and emotional – of her subjects and, ultimately, herself are explored.
In 2010 Larysa finished her most recent project, Between Waves, which focuses on her own heritage, while completing the International Center of Photography’s program of Photojournalism and Documentary Photography. Her photographs have been featured in numerous group exhibitions and publications. She currently lives in New York City.
